That fixed payment can end years sooner. Check for prepayment penalties, see what $100 to $400 extra a month saves, and find side income to fund it.
This in-depth guide covers everything you need to know about pay off a personal loan early with a side hustle. Based on verified income data and real-world case studies from our database of 138 side hustle tactics.
Paying off a personal loan early is usually worth it, as long as your contract has no prepayment penalty and you have a small emergency fund in place first. Most personal loans charge simple interest on the balance you still owe, so every extra dollar you send cuts the interest you pay from that day on. On a hypothetical $15,000 five-year loan at 11.90%, the Federal Reserve's latest average for 24-month personal loans at banks, an extra $200 a month clears the loan more than two years early and keeps about $2,300 in your pocket.
Maybe the loan paid for something that felt urgent at the time: a wedding, a move, a pile of card balances you wanted gone, a car repair you could not put off. The thing it paid for is over now, and the payment is still here, the same amount on the same day, every month for years. It is the line on your bank statement that reminds you of a decision you have mixed feelings about.
Fixed-term loans have one quiet advantage. You know exactly when the debt ends, which means you can also move that date. Five years can become three, or two, and you choose how fast by how much you add each month.
Here is how to check your contract, work out what extra payments save, and find the money to send.
How personal loan interest works
A typical personal loan is an installment loan: a fixed amount borrowed, repaid in equal monthly payments over a set term. Most charge simple interest. Each month the lender works out interest on the balance you still owe (your annual rate divided by twelve), takes that first, and puts the rest of your payment toward principal.
On a hypothetical $15,000 five-year loan at 11.90%, the payment is about $333 a month. In the first month, interest is $15,000 times 11.90% divided by 12, which is about $149. Only $184 of your payment reduces the balance. As the balance falls, the interest share shrinks and the principal share grows, which is why the last year of a loan feels so much faster than the first.
When you pay extra, the extra goes straight to principal (once you have told the lender to apply it that way), and next month's interest is charged on a smaller balance. That is all there is to it, and it is why early extra payments do the most work.
Precomputed interest: the exception to check for
A few lenders, often in subprime or store finance, use precomputed loans. The total interest is calculated at the start and built into what you owe. On these loans, paying early saves less, and how much you save depends on how the lender calculates the refund of unearned interest.
US federal law sets a floor. Under 15 U.S. Code section 1615, if you prepay a consumer loan in full, the lender must promptly refund any unearned interest. For precomputed loans with a term longer than 61 months made after September 30, 1993, the lender cannot use the "Rule of 78s", a method that front-loads interest, and must use a method at least as favourable as the actuarial method. The same law gives you the right to a statement of the amount needed to pay off a precomputed loan within five days of asking, with one free statement a year.
If your contract mentions "precomputed interest", the "Rule of 78s" or "add-on interest", ask the lender for a written payoff quote before you plan anything.
Check for a prepayment penalty
Most personal loans today let you pay early with no fee, but you need to see it in writing for your own loan. The CFPB's guidance for auto loans applies to installment loans generally: your contract and state law decide whether you can pay early without a penalty, some states prohibit prepayment penalties for certain loans, and you should check your Truth in Lending disclosures and contract.
To check yours:
- Find your loan agreement and the Truth in Lending disclosure that came with it.
- Look for the "Prepayment" section. It will say whether you "may" or "will not" have to pay a penalty, and whether you are entitled to a refund of part of the finance charge.
- If anything is unclear, ask the lender by message so you have the answer in writing: "Is there any fee for extra principal payments or for paying the loan off in full early?"
One cost you cannot get back is an origination fee. If the lender took a fee out of the loan when you borrowed, that money was spent on day one. Paying early does not refund it, and that is fine. It is a sunk cost and has no bearing on the decision you are making now.
If you are struggling to make the payment
Maybe you are reading this because the payment is the problem. Paying early can wait. Missing payments is what costs you most, through late fees, a damaged credit report and, eventually, collections.
The FTC's advice in How to Get Out of Debt is direct: if you are behind, call the creditors you owe before a debt collector is involved, tell them what is going on and try to work out a new plan with lower payments you can manage. Many lenders have hardship programmes that can lower or pause payments for a few months. Ask what it costs, whether interest keeps building and how it will be reported, and get any agreement in writing.
If you have several debts and cannot keep up with all of them, a nonprofit credit counsellor can help you build a budget and, if it fits, a debt management plan. The CFPB explains that most credit counselling organisations are nonprofits, and suggests starting with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling or the Financial Counseling Association of America. It also lists red flags: an organisation that will not send free information before you share details, staff who are paid more if you sign up for certain services, or a debt management plan pushed as your only option before anyone has looked at your finances.
In this situation, side income goes first to keeping current and to a small cash buffer. The early payoff plan comes after.
Should you pay this loan off early?
Paying off a personal loan early gives you a guaranteed return equal to its rate. At 11.90%, every extra dollar earns exactly 11.90% a year, risk free. Few safe places to put money pay that well. It is still worth checking the order before you start.
- Keep current on everything. A missed payment anywhere costs more than any early payoff saves.
- Build a small emergency fund. Even $500 to $1,000 in cash stops a surprise bill from going onto a credit card. Once a loan is paid down, the lender will not let you borrow that principal back, so cash matters.
- Take any employer retirement match. It is an immediate return.
- Pay the highest rate first. If you also carry a credit card at 20% or more, that card gets your extra money before this loan. The credit card payoff guide covers that order.
- Then this loan. Every extra dollar now works at your loan's full rate.
If you took this loan to consolidate credit cards, one more rule matters more than all the maths: do not let the card balances come back. A consolidation loan only helps if the cards stay at zero.
The maths, with a hypothetical $15,000 loan
This is a hypothetical example to show how extra payments change the numbers. Your own balance, rate and term will differ.
Take a $15,000 loan over five years at 11.90%, the Federal Reserve G.19 average for 24-month personal loans at commercial banks in August 2026 (released October 7, 2026). The payment is about $333 a month. Add a fixed extra amount to principal every month from the start:
| Extra each month | Paid off in | Total interest | Interest you keep |
|---|
| $0 | 5 years | about $4,970 | none |
| $100 | about 3 years 7 months | about $3,470 | about $1,500 |
| $200 | about 2 years 10 months | about $2,680 | about $2,300 |
| $400 | about 1 year 11 months | about $1,850 | about $3,130 |
The interest saved is only half the story. Look at the time. With an extra $200 a month, the loan ends 26 months early. That is 26 payments of $333, about $8,600 in total, that you never have to make, and from then on the whole amount stays in your account.
Want to try your own loan? The site's debt payoff calculator runs the same month-by-month maths, and if you have other debts too, it shows which to pay first and when each one disappears.
Picture the month the last payment clears. The $333 is still yours on the first. Maybe it becomes your emergency fund, then a holiday you pay for in cash, then investments. Which would you do first?
Lenders do not always apply extra money the way you expect. By default, some treat an extra payment as paying next month's bill early, which moves your due date forward but does not shorten the loan or save much interest.
- Use the principal option. In the lender's app or website, look for "pay extra toward principal" or "additional principal". If there is none, send the extra as a separate payment and message the lender asking that it be applied to principal.
- Keep paying the regular payment. Even if the app says you are "paid ahead", keep paying on schedule, or the extra will not cut your term.
- Check the next statement. The balance should have fallen by your normal principal plus the full extra amount.
- Ask for a payoff quote near the end. When you are close, get a written payoff amount good to a specific date, pay it in one go, and ask for a letter confirming the loan is closed.
Side hustles that fit a fixed-term loan
A personal loan has a fixed end date, which makes it a good match for a side hustle with a fixed lifespan. You do not need a business for life. You need a steady $100 to $400 a month for two or three years.
How many hours could you give this each week without dreading it: three, six, ten?
For the first $100 a month: no startup cost
Paid user testing costs nothing to start and pays within a week or two. The site's guide puts it at $50 to $800 a month, but reported averages near the top need several platforms and 10 to 15 hours a week. Treat $50 to $150 as an honest target next to a full-time job.
Selling things you already own is the fastest money of all, and every sale is one less thing you bought on credit sitting in a cupboard. The platform fee calculator shows what eBay, Mercari or Facebook Marketplace will take. If you enjoy the hunt afterwards, thrift flipping turns it into a repeatable side income. The guide puts startup at $50 to $500, with first profit in one to three weeks.
For $200 a month: a couple of evenings or one weekend day
Food delivery multi-apping starts paying almost immediately if you already have a car. The guide reports that single-app drivers average $12 to $18 an hour before costs and that experienced multi-appers do better. Fuel, wear and tax come out of that, so count your real hourly rate after costs. Two dinner shifts a week can cover $200 a month in many areas.
Pet sitting and boarding suits you if you like animals and have a home that allows them. The guide lists walks and drop-ins at $15 to $30, and boarding at $30 to $65 a night. Four boarding nights a month covers the $200 row.
For $400 a month and up: sell a skill
Upwork and Fiverr let you sell what you already do at work: spreadsheets, design, writing, admin, coding. The guide is clear about the costs: Fiverr takes a flat 20%, and Upwork charges for each application. Freelance writing has a range of $1,000 to $10,000 a month for people who build a client list, and takes one to three months to reach profit. A single steady client can be enough to pay this loan off in under two years.
If you want each route planned day by day, RichTactic Pro has a 30-day plan for every side hustle on the site, message templates for your first customers and a private group of people at the same stage. It is one payment with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
A weekly plan you can keep
A fixed-term loan rewards a boring, repeatable routine.
Week 1: set up.
- Day 1: find your loan agreement and confirm there is no prepayment penalty or precomputed interest. Write down the balance, rate, payment and end date.
- Day 2: put the numbers into the debt payoff calculator with $100, $200 and $400 of extra a month, and pick a target.
- Day 3: open a separate account for side income and name it after the loan ("Loan gone by 2028").
- Day 4 or 5: choose one side hustle from this page and set up the profile, listing or app.
- Weekend: list five things you own that you no longer use.
Weeks 2 to 4: first money.
- Work the same slots every week, for example Tuesday and Thursday evenings plus Saturday morning.
- Every payment lands in the side-income account.
- Set aside tax from each payment before you count the rest.
Every month: payment day.
- The day after your regular payment, send everything in the side-income account above a small buffer to principal.
- Check the next statement to confirm the balance fell by the full amount.
- Update a simple countdown: balance left, months left.
Every quarter: review.
- Rerun the calculator with the new balance and see how far the end date has moved.
- Decide whether to add hours, keep the pace or take a month off. A month off is fine. Quitting is what costs you.
Set it up so it runs without willpower
- Separate account. Side income never mixes with your spending money.
- Tax first. In the US, side income is usually self-employment income with no tax withheld. Use the side hustle tax calculator to see how much to set aside, and read the side hustle tax guide for quarterly payments.
- Automatic extra payment. If your lender lets you schedule a recurring principal payment, set it at an amount you are confident of, and add any surplus by hand.
- Cards at zero. If the loan consolidated card debt, remove saved cards from shopping apps and keep one card for emergencies only.
If you have a UK personal loan
UK borrowers have strong legal rights here. Under section 94 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974, you can repay a regulated loan early, in full or in part, at any time. The lender may claim compensation for early repayment of a fixed-rate loan, but section 95A caps it. It can only be claimed if you repay more than £8,000 in any 12-month period, it must be fair and objectively justified, and it cannot exceed 1% of the amount repaid early (0.5% if one year or less is left on the loan), or the interest you would have paid over the rest of the term, whichever is lower.
In practice, that means most side-income overpayments, a few hundred pounds a month, fall well under the £8,000 threshold and carry no charge. Ask your lender for a settlement figure and how a partial early repayment will be applied: to shorten the term or to lower the payment. To finish sooner, ask for a shorter term.
If you are struggling, free help is available from StepChange, National Debtline and Citizens Advice, and you can contact your lender about forbearance before you miss a payment.
Mistakes to avoid
- Hustling hard while ignoring a hardship plan you qualify for. If the payment itself is the problem, call the lender first. A reduced payment for six months might be the help you need while side income builds.
- Paying a debt relief company. The FTC warns that only scammers try to collect fees before they settle any of your debts or enrol you in a debt management plan, guarantee to settle all your debts, or tell you to stop talking to your creditors without explaining the consequences. Debt settlement can also damage your credit and any forgiven amount may be taxable.
- Taking a new loan to pay off this one, without doing the maths. A consolidation or refinance loan with an origination fee and a longer term can cost more in total even at a lower rate.
- Letting extra payments sit as "paid ahead". Check that every extra dollar reduced principal.
- Draining your cash to zero. Paid-off principal cannot be borrowed back. Keep a small buffer.
- Spending on a side-hustle course. If a course costs more than three months of extra payments, it has added a debt. Every route above starts near $0.
- Running card balances back up. If this loan cleared your cards, new card debt undoes the work.
Your first step today
Do one thing this evening, in this order, and stop there.
- Find your loan agreement and check the prepayment section for any penalty or precomputed interest.
- Write down the balance, rate and payment, and run them through the debt payoff calculator with $200 of extra a month.
- Choose one side hustle from this page and open its guide.
- Log in to your lender's app and find where extra principal payments go.
If you carry more than one debt, the full series on paying off debt with a side hustle covers each one in the order that saves you most.
If $200 a month could end this loan more than two years early, what will you do with the first payment you no longer have to make?
