No PTPTN discount in 2026, a 10% one promised for 2027. The real rules, the maths on RM30,000 and side income.
This in-depth guide covers everything you need to know about ptptn: how to pay it off faster with a side hustle. Based on verified income data and real-world case studies from our database of 138 side hustle tactics.
To pay off PTPTN faster, set up a salary deduction or direct debit for your normal instalment, then pay a fixed extra amount every month through myPTPTN before the 27th. PTPTN's own FAQ says paying more than your instalment settles the loan early and makes it cheaper, because the 1% ujrah only runs until the day you finish. On a hypothetical RM30,000 balance, an extra RM300 a month cuts a 15-year schedule to about 5 years 5 months and saves about RM2,875 in ujrah.
Maybe your first payslip says RM3,000 and it already feels spoken for. Rent for a room in PJ, the car instalment, petrol, Touch 'n Go reloads, something for your parents at the end of the month. Then the PTPTN reminder arrives, and the balance looks barely smaller than the day you graduated. Your friends post holiday photos from Bangkok while you wonder whether you are even allowed to fly.
You did nothing wrong by borrowing to study. Prices rose faster than starting salaries, and the loan arrived with every other adult bill. PTPTN itself is cheap. What makes it heavy is the length: fifteen years of a monthly reminder on your CCRIS report while you try to get approved for a first home.
Here is how the loan works in 2026, what the new Budget 2027 changes mean, and a side-income plan with the arithmetic shown.
How a PTPTN loan works
Most borrowers today hold an Ujrah loan. PTPTN defines ujrah as a 1% per annum fee on the outstanding loan balance, charged to cover the cost of running the loan. Older conventional loans can be converted to ujrah on application.
Your schedule length depends on how much you owe when the ujrah loan is set up. According to the same PTPTN repayment page:
| Ujrah principal | Repayment period |
|---|
| RM10,000 and below | 5 years |
| Over RM10,000 to RM22,000 | 10 years |
| Over RM22,000 to RM50,000 | 15 years |
| Over RM50,000 | 20 years |
PTPTN works out the total ujrah up front: balance times 1% times the number of years. Its own example is RM19,432 over 10 years, which gives RM1,943.20 of ujrah and an instalment of RM178.13 a month.
PTPTN says repayment starts within 12 months after your loan ends, without waiting for a Loan Repayment Notice. Ujrah starts from the 13th month, so anything you pay before then carries no charge. Payments must reach PTPTN before the 27th to count in that month's statement.
Paying less than your instalment creates arrears. Paying more is allowed, and PTPTN says it means early settlement and lower charges.
What happens if you stop paying (the "blacklist" question)
People say "blacklist" to mean three different things.
CCRIS. PTPTN lists every borrower in CCRIS once repayment is due. The report shows your last 12 months of instalments, so missed months stay visible for a year even after you catch up. PTPTN says banks may not consider a loan application if your record shows arrears. After full settlement, the record changes to "COMPLETE" within 14 working days.
Travel restrictions. As part of Budget 2026, PTPTN's January 2026 notice lists the borrowers who can be stopped from travelling abroad: those more than five years in arrears who can afford to pay, those with a court judgment recorded against them, and those working overseas without repaying. If that is you, PTPTN says to come forward and negotiate at least five days before your flight. A recent graduate a few months behind is a different case from the groups on that list.
Debt collectors. PTPTN's July 2026 notice says it now hands some accounts to appointed debt collection agencies (APH), with priority for accounts more than 120 months in arrears or with a court judgment. Every ringgit the agency collects carries a 15% fee that you pay, and once your account is with them you can no longer negotiate directly with PTPTN. That fee is more than ten years of ujrah, and it is avoidable.
The Higher Education Ministry told Parliament that arrears stood at RM10.7 billion across 1.16 million borrowers as at 31 August 2026. If you are behind, you have company, and there are standard fixes.
PTPTN discount 2026: what is real and what has ended
The 10%, 15% and 20% discounts still quoted online come from a campaign that ran from 14 October 2023 to 31 March 2024. It has ended.
For 2026 itself, PTPTN said on its official Threads account that there is no repayment discount under Budget 2026, and that any future discount would be announced on its website.
That announcement came with Budget 2027, tabled on 9 October 2026. PTPTN's Budget 2027 notice lists four measures for 2027:
- Repayment deferment for borrowers earning up to RM2,500 a month.
- A minimum repayment of RM50 a month for borrowers earning RM2,501 to RM3,000.
- A 10% discount for active borrowers with no arrears who repay consistently.
- A tax deduction for employers who repay PTPTN on behalf of their staff, covering payments from January 2027 to December 2028.
Income will be checked against LHDN records. As of October 2026, PTPTN says details will follow, so nobody can yet tell you how the 10% is calculated. What you can do now is reach 2027 with zero arrears, because that is the stated condition.
One more change if you are still studying: from 1 January 2026, the full exemption for a first-class degree is limited to B40 and M40 students at public universities, and you must apply within 12 months of convocation.
If you cannot pay right now
Deal with this before any plan to pay faster. A missed month costs you more on CCRIS than a slow payoff ever will.
Restructure the loan. PTPTN's restructuring sets your instalment at roughly 5% to 8% of your gross income and can stretch repayment to age 60. The first restructuring is free; after that the fee runs from RM50 to RM200. If you are in arrears, you must first clear at least 50% of the arrears plus any costs. Apply through myPTPTN.
Defer if you are unemployed or studying. Unemployed borrowers can defer for six months at a time, up to 24 months in total, and PTPTN says no charges build up during the deferment. Deferment still allows CCRIS listing, so it protects you from enforcement more than from a bad record.
Use the 2027 measures if they fit. If you earn RM2,500 or less, the Budget 2027 deferment may mean no payments next year. That is breathing room, so do not mistake it for forgiveness.
Talk to AKPK about your other debts. BNM says AKPK's counselling and debt management services are free. AKPK restructures hire purchase, credit card and personal loans from BNM-regulated lenders; PTPTN you negotiate with PTPTN. Banks also offer their own repayment assistance to lower or spread instalments, and BNM asks borrowers to engage early.
Should you pay PTPTN faster at all?
At 1% a year, PTPTN costs less than almost any other credit you can get, so an extra ringgit there saves very little compared with the same ringgit against a credit card, a late BNPL instalment or a personal loan. Look at what actually leads to bankruptcy. In 2025, Malaysia's Insolvency Department recorded 2,946 bankruptcies from personal loans and 572 from car hire purchase, against 13 from scholarships and study loans.
A sensible order:
- Pay every instalment on time, including PTPTN's minimum, so CCRIS stays clean.
- Build one month of essentials in cash, so one motorcycle repair does not go on a card or BNPL.
- Clear any card, BNPL or personal loan balance.
- Then pay PTPTN faster.
There are still good reasons to clear PTPTN early. A settled loan shows as complete on CCRIS before you apply for a home loan, and it ends any chance of travel restrictions or collectors. Peace of mind is a fair reason too.
Car loans and BNPL: the debts that grow faster
PTPTN gets the headlines, but cars and BNPL are where young Malaysians get hurt.
Car hire purchase. Most car loans signed before the Hire-Purchase (Amendment) Act 2026 use a flat rate with the Rule of 78. BNM explains that this front-loads interest, so early in a 9-year loan most of your instalment goes to interest. The amended Act took effect on 1 June 2026 and moves new loans to the reducing balance method, priced as an effective interest rate (EIR), with lenders given until 31 March 2027 to switch. Existing loans keep their original terms. Buying a car now? Ask "What is the EIR?" and compare. For the method of paying one down, see the site's guide to paying off a car loan early.
Buy now pay later. BNM counted 7.5 million active accounts with non-bank BNPL providers and RM4.9 billion outstanding at the end of 2025, up from RM3.8 billion six months earlier, with 3.2% of that debt overdue. BNPL is now regulated: the Consumer Credit Act 2025 came into force on 1 March 2026, and BNPL providers must be licensed by the new Consumer Credit Commission, with licensing from 1 June 2026 and a six-month transition. Household debt overall stood at 84.8% of GDP. If you have several small plans open, the site's BNPL payoff guide shows how to stop them stacking.
The maths, with a hypothetical RM30,000 balance
A hypothetical example: you owe RM30,000 on an ujrah loan, which puts you in PTPTN's 15-year band. Using PTPTN's published formula, total ujrah is RM30,000 times 1% times 15, which is RM4,500. Your instalment is RM34,500 divided by 180 months, or about RM191.67 a month, and ujrah accrues at RM25 a month until you finish.
Now add a fixed extra amount every month:
| Extra each month | Paid off in | Total ujrah | Ujrah saved |
|---|
| RM0 | 15 years | RM4,500 | none |
| RM100 | about 9 years 5 months | about RM2,825 | about RM1,675 |
| RM300 | about 5 years 5 months | about RM1,625 | about RM2,875 |
| RM500 | about 3 years 9 months | about RM1,125 | about RM3,375 |
Why it works: under PTPTN's formula, ujrah is a flat RM25 for every month the loan stays open, so every month you cut from the end is RM25 you never pay. The RM100 row removes 67 months. If your statement charges ujrah on the reducing balance instead, the time saved is similar but the ringgit saving is smaller, about RM780 for the RM100 row by our calculation.
Look at the years as well as the money. If you graduated at 23, the RM300 row ends the loan before you turn 30 instead of in your late thirties. That is a decade without PTPTN on your bank statement or your CCRIS report.
No lump-sum discount is confirmed for 2026, so the table includes none. The site's debt payoff calculator shows dollars, but the maths works in any currency: enter your balance, 1% as the rate and your instalment.
Salary deduction (potongan gaji). In myPTPTN, go to Perkhidmatan, then Permohonan Potongan Gaji, choose your loan and enter your employer's details. The deduction cannot be lower than your instalment, and PTPTN says changing the amount needs a new salary deduction authorisation form. A deduction set at instalment plus your extra runs without you touching it.
Direct debit. The same menu has Permohonan Debit Terus, for when your employer does not handle deductions.
Top-ups through myPTPTN. Pay side income as a separate payment before the 27th so it lands in that month's statement, and check the next statement to see the balance fell by the full amount. PTPTN's channel table shows agent and e-wallet fees of RM0.50 to RM2, while FPX on the PTPTN portal is free.
When you finish, download your settlement letter (Surat Penyelesaian Hutang) from myPTPTN and keep it.
Side hustles that work in Malaysia
Check one rule first. If you are a civil servant, Regulation 5 of the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations 1993 limits paid work for any company, firm or private person, and JPA says side-income work is not allowed during working hours. JPA's guidance refers to officers approved for outside work, so get written approval from your head of department before you start. In the private sector, read your contract for a clause on outside work.
The Gig Workers Act 2025 came into force on 31 March 2026 and covers e-hailing drivers, p-hailing riders and some freelancers. Platforms must register you with PERKESO and deduct 1.25% of your daily task earnings for the Lindung Kendiri scheme, which covers injuries while you work.
The ranges below come from the site's guides and are mostly US figures, so plan with a smaller ringgit target, assuming 6 to 10 hours a week next to a full-time job.
For the RM100 to RM300 rows: start this week
Food delivery with more than one app pays from your first week and costs little to start if you already ride. The site's guide puts it at US$1,000 to US$6,000 a month with US$0 to US$200 to start, but that is full-time US work. Treat RM300 a month as your first target, and use the hourly rate calculator to check what you clear after petrol and phone data. Track a full month before you plan on more.
Online tutoring uses the subject you just studied, and SPM candidates and university students are the obvious market. The guide's range is US$1,000 to US$10,000 a month with US$0 to US$500 to start, but that top end is full time. Check what tutors near you charge for the same level, then work out how many weekly hours the RM300 row needs.
For RM300 and up: skills and selling
Upwork and Fiverr suit you if you write, design, edit video or do data work. The guide's range is US$300 to US$8,000 a month. Fiverr takes a flat 20%, and on Upwork you pay to apply. Clients paying in US dollars stretch further in ringgit, which is the local advantage. Expect one to three months before steady income.
TikTok Shop affiliate pays commission when your videos sell products. The guide's range is US$100 to US$30,000 a month, startup US$0 to US$100, and the top end is rare. Treat it as upside on top of a steadier hustle, and disclose every paid link.
Only if you already own the right car
E-hailing has a licensing step that delivery does not. APAD says drivers must be Malaysian citizens registered with a licensed operator, hold a PSV licence from JPJ, and drive a vehicle with a valid e-hailing vehicle permit (eVP). The guide's range is US$400 to US$4,500 a month, and it warns that vehicle costs eat much of the gross. If the car is still on hire purchase, the extra mileage costs you twice.
RichTactic Pro has a day-by-day 30-day plan for each side hustle route, message templates and a private group, for one payment with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Declare your side income to LHDN
LHDN treats gig work as a business, taxed under paragraph 4(a) of the Income Tax Act 1967. Its own guide names Grabfood, Grabcar, Foodpanda and Lalamove as gig platforms and says LHDN works with platforms and payment gateways to identify gig earners. If you do not report the income, LHDN can raise an estimated assessment under section 90(3).
Salary plus side business income means you file Form B by 30 June instead of Form BE by 30 April, and keep records for seven years. Move a fixed share of every payout into a tax pot until you know your bracket.
A week that fits around a 9-to-6 job
Set it up once: salary deduction or direct debit for the instalment, a separate account for side income with a tax pot inside it, and one month of essentials saved before any top-up. Then the week runs like this.
- Monday and Wednesday, 7.30pm to 10pm: delivery shifts, or one tutoring session each.
- Saturday morning: your longest block, three to four hours.
- Sunday, 20 minutes: transfer the week's side income to a separate account, move the tax share out, and note your earnings per hour.
- Around the 20th: pay what has built up as a top-up through myPTPTN, well before the 27th.
- First week of each month: check your PTPTN statement and confirm the balance fell by the full extra.
That is about 8 to 10 hours a week. If it costs you sleep, drop one evening.
Mistakes and scams to avoid
- Hustling while ignoring options you qualify for. If you earn RM2,500 or less, the 2027 deferment may help. If your instalment is too high, a free first restructuring may fix it faster than extra shifts.
- Paying anyone outside PTPTN's official channels. PTPTN says its appointed agencies cannot accept cash and that payment goes through official channels only. If someone claiming to be an agent calls, check with the PTPTN Careline on 03-2193 3000.
- Believing "PTPTN discount" posts. Real discounts are announced on PTPTN's own site.
- Unlicensed lenders and "debt consolidation" offers. Check the name on BNM's Financial Consumer Alert List first. Licensed bank debt collectors may only call between 8am and 9pm and may not harass your family or employer.
- Using BNPL or a card to pay PTPTN. Moving a 1% debt onto a costlier one runs backwards.
- Draining EPF for a 1% loan. PTPTN lists EPF as a repayment channel, but that is your retirement.
- Borrowing to start a hustle, or buying a course that costs more than your top-up. Every route above starts for little or nothing.
Bankruptcy is the outcome all of this avoids. People aged 20 to 34 made up 803 of the 5,559 bankruptcies registered from January to September 2026, and a bankrupt person cannot run a sole proprietorship without permission.
Your first step today
Tonight, do this in order and then stop.
- Log in to myPTPTN, download your balance confirmation and write down your instalment and any arrears.
- If you have arrears, clear or restructure them first. Zero arrears is the condition for the 2027 discount.
- Apply for salary deduction or direct debit for your instalment, then pick one extra amount from the table above.
- Choose one hustle from this page and open its guide.
If PTPTN is one of several debts, the series on paying off debt with a side hustle shows which to clear first.
