Brian Dean Review: Pricing, Claims and Track Record
| By RichTactic Editorial Team
Founded Backlinko and created the Skyscraper Technique. Sold to Semrush. Known for quality SEO education over quantity.
- Platform: Blog
- Followers: 500K+
- Trust Score: 4.5/5
- Scam Score: 1/5
- Course Price: Sold to Semrush
This record ran to sixteen hundred words without a date, figure, quotation or source, while asserting that the Semrush acquisition "validates the practitioner credibility of the content". The acquisition is real. The record never established what it was.
What Happened
Dean built Backlinko into an SEO content and course business with about 500,000 monthly visitors, and sold it to Semrush in January 2022. He announced it himself at the time. He then built Exploding Topics, a trend-detection product, and Semrush acquired that too. His own profile reads: "Founder of Backlinko & Exploding Topics, both acquired by Semrush (NYSE: SEMR)."
Semrush has since been acquired by Adobe, in a deal reported at $1.9 billion. So the chain of custody on the content a reader might find at Backlinko now runs through two owners neither of whom wrote it.
The Price Is Reported Three Ways
This is worth spelling out, because it is a recurring problem in this database. The sale figure appears as:
- "a mid-seven-figure sum": They Got Acquired, which interviewed him
- $4 million: several secondary write-ups
- $5 million: a podcast interview description
No figure is asserted here. What can be said is that the sale was in the millions for a business he ran with a very small team, which is the genuinely instructive part: Backlinko was a content site, not a venture-backed startup, and it sold for a life-changing amount because the audience and the ranking positions were the asset.
On "Validates the Practitioner Credibility"
The record leaned on the acquisition as proof the advice works. It is evidence of something narrower and still real: a public SEO software company judged his traffic and brand worth buying twice. That says his SEO worked on his own site. It does not follow that his published techniques produce the same result for a reader starting today, on a different site, against a search engine that has changed substantially since the Skyscraper Technique was named.
What Does Brian Dean Teach?
Brian Dean operates primarily on Blog, where they have built an audience of 500K+ followers. Founded Backlinko and created the Skyscraper Technique. Sold to Semrush. Known for quality SEO education over quantity. Their content focuses on online income strategies delivered through Blog-based courses and programs priced at Sold to Semrush.
Course Value Analysis
Brian Dean charges Sold to Semrush for their program. When evaluating whether this price is justified, consider: What specific, actionable outcomes does the course promise? Are there free alternatives covering the same material on YouTube or blogs? Does the price include ongoing access, community support, or mentorship? Many Blog educators offer similar content at lower price points, so compare before committing.
Green Flags
- Built and sold real company
- Created influential techniques
- Quality over quantity
- No aggressive tactics
- Announced both exits publicly under his own name
- Built and sold two businesses to the same public company, which is a harder thing to fake than an audience figure
Red Flags
- This record previously carried a 1,600-word review body with no date, figure, quotation or source, while resting its assessment on an acquisition it never established the terms of
- The Backlinko sale price circulates as mid-seven-figures, $4M and $5M in different accounts; none is confirmed, so no figure is asserted here
- An acquisition shows his SEO worked on his own site; it does not show his published techniques work for a reader starting today against a changed search engine
- Less active since sale
- SEO-only focus
